Additionally, these discussions acknowledged that ending our nation’s childhood obesity crisis required a long-term “generational” strategy and therefore needed an organization that would exist beyond the timeframe of the Administration to continue efforts initiated by Mrs. In late 2009, discussions between a number of organizations, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), AHG and the White House, led to the identification of a need for a national organization that could drive voluntary changes by business to address childhood obesity with public-private partnerships, and hold companies accountable to implement those changes. The Let’s Move! initiative would include a broad set of activities one strategy included work with industry. In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama was considering a major initiative to battle childhood obesity. When the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association founded the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG) in 2005, two of their four fundamental “pillars” were voluntary agreement approaches with food and beverage companies and with health insurers. Private-public partnerships were forming to solve some of the most critical global public health issues, and both the World Bank and World Health Organization promoted these approaches. Walmart and Blue Apron also will work with PHA to engage with their customers to spread the message of Waffles + Mochi while raising charitable funds for Pass the Love meal box distributions. Participating cities will be announced later in 2021. All recipes will be inspired by or featured in Waffles + Mochi and will support children participating in the cooking process and earning ingredient badges on. Each box will include high quality ingredients, and easy, replicable recipes to create three family meals that are fun, fast and affordable. Socially-conscious food service organization Genuine Foods will source, assemble, and ship the Pass the Love meal boxes to participating cities. Each city deployment will take place over four weeks and will be structured to build the capacity of local non-profits in those cities, modeled in part after PHA’s successful COVID-19 Fresh Food Fund, launched in 2020. Pass the Love meal boxes will be provided for free to families in cities throughout the country with funds raised from the campaign. “Genuine Foods is committed to creating more equitable food systems in communities across the country, and building and sharing these Pass the Love meal boxes is a momentous opportunity to transform the lives of so many families with food insecurity,” said Jeff Mills, CEO of Genuine Foods. Genuine Foods has been tapped by PHA to create Pass the Love branded, bundled meal boxes for families in food insecure communities around the country, with the goal to provide more than one million meals to families.
